Head of Health & Safety (Business Unit HADPI)

We are looking for a Head of Health & Safety for one of our business units that covers Health, Aerospace, defence, Public and industrial (HADPI) so very interesting with lots of variety. You will provide strategic leadership and expert safety guidance across the Business Unit, ensuring GXO meets and exceeds all operational, legal, and regulatory obligations. The role drives a proactive safety culture aligned with Road to Zero, strengthening risk controls, elevating safety performance, and embedding consistent QHSSSE standards across all sites. This includes developing and mentoring QSHE professionals, integrating effective management systems, and partnering with senior leaders to identify, prioritise, and mitigate critical risks. The role ensures the delivery of a safe, compliant, and high‑performing operational environment through continuous improvement, risk reduction, strong governance, stakeholder engagement, and innovation.

As part of our Senior Central QHSE team, you’ll join us on a full time, permanent, basis, with travel throughout the UK, we are flexible at which one of our many sites you can call your base!

 

Pay, benefits and more:

We’re looking to offer a salary of £70,000.00 to £85,000.00 (dependant on experience) per annum, and 25 days annual leave (plus bank holidays). What you’ll do on a typical day:

  • Support the QHSE Director in providing strategies and initiatives, on a priority basis, to ensure the business risks are managed in a robust manner
  • Ensure all sites within the BU are using and maintaining GXO electronic systems for the reporting, recording and investigation of all relevant activities
  • Work closely with the QHSE Leadership team, Business Unit Directors, Account Directors and Regional EHS Managers to ensure all improvement plans are aligned and best practice is proactively shared
  • Develop Business Unit QHSE Objectives and ensure these are aligned to the UK&I strategy and objectives, as well as monitor and measure these via a Management Action Plan (MAP)  
  • In addition to core responsibilities, this role must ensure safety excellence within highly regulated sectors such as Defence and Pharmaceuticals
  • Ensuring full compliance with regulatory frameworks including MHRA, GMP/GDP, GxP, DSA, MOD standards, COMAH, and relevant HSE requirements
  • Leading safety governance for operations involving controlled substances, classified materials, sterile environments, hazardous chemicals, munitions, or sensitive defence assets
  • Working closely with quality, operational, and security teams to maintain audit readiness, regulatory compliance, and robust safety documentation standards
  • Maintaining familiarity with sector‑specific incident reporting requirements and leading high‑integrity investigations in line with regulated‑industry expectations

 

What you need to succeed at GXO:

  • NEBOSH Diploma or NVQ Level 6 or BSC Diploma, relevant level in OHSE – essential
  • IOSH competency framework
  • Full UK Driving License with ability to travel by sea, air, rail, and tunnel
  • Willingness to work unsociable hours and overnight stays when required
  • Ability to pass CRB checks and driving assessments
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Security Clearance (SC) where required.
  • 5 to 7 years’ experience within a similar role
