Transport Team Manager

Join us as our Transport Team Manager, joining our collaborative team within our 550,000 sq. ft multi temperature distribution centre in Sherburn in Elmet (LS25) dedicated to Sainsbury’s. You’ll play a key role within the transport operation, with responsibility for the effective and timely despatch of deliveries to Sainsbury’s retail and convenience stores, using the customers latest Integrated Transport Management System.

 

This is a full time, permanent position. Working 4 on 4 off, 06:00-18:00 with an average of 42.463 hours per week.

We’re looking to offer a salary of up to £34,170 per annum, and 23.5 days annual leave (inclusive of bank holidays). Your benefits package includes a company sponsored pension scheme, life assurance and access to our benefits platform, including retail discounts

 

What you’ll do on a typical day:

 

  • Lead and support a fleet of drivers and transport support colleagues, ensuring compliance with company guidelines, the Road Traffic Act, and all health & safety regulations
  • Deliver a first‑class service to the store network by maintaining strong communication with stores and ensuring timely, efficient despatch
  • Achieve weekly and monthly operational targets through effective use of the Integrated Transport Management System and Yard Smart
  • Manage and engage the transport team by briefing drivers at the start of each shift, sharing performance updates, company news, and procedures, and motivating teams through guidance and encouragement
  • Maintain positive on‑site relationships, including proactive engagement with union representatives, while undertaking all reasonable duties to support the effective running of the department

 

What you need to succeed at GXO:

 

  • You’ve been around transport operations and know how things tick, with a good understanding of transport rules and how to keep people safe
  • You enjoy leading people and bringing teams together, whether that’s keeping things on track, boosting morale, or rolling up your sleeves when needed
  • You’re comfortable with systems and screens, with strong PC skills and experience (or enthusiasm) for using scheduling and driver management tools
  • You’re a natural communicator, happy chatting with drivers on shift or sharing clear updates in writing — teamwork is your comfort zone
  • You’re proactive, flexible, and level‑headed, great at juggling deadlines, using your initiative, and staying positive in a fast‑moving environment
