As the Lead Continuous Improvement Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the identification and evaluation of continuous improvement projects and initiatives.  Activities will include shop floor observations / gemba walks, and working with site operators. Familiarity with lean tools and techniques is essential to the delivery of your work.  You will use, modify, and create current and future state process flow diagrams, facility layouts / block diagrams, material flows, and throughput / productivity / capacity / utilization analyses.  Familiarity with material handling equipment and automation solutions, storage media designs, and virtual processes such as waving, profiling, slotting, pick path optimization will be useful in your role. A bias for action is critical in this role.

What you’ll do on a typical day:

  • Partner directly with site and division operations leadership to identify, prioritize, and execute continuous improvement work focused on productivity, throughput, and cost improvement
  • Conduct onsite operational assessments to identify inefficiencies in areas such as layout, flow, labor utilization, equipment usage, and virtual processes. Develop clear, actionable improvement plans
  • Use data, observation, and root cause analysis to diagnose performance gaps and implement corrective actions
  • Facilitate joint planning sessions with clients and operations teams to align on performance gaps, improvement roadmaps, and evolving business needs
  • Design facility layout, storage media, and material flow configurations and solutions
  • Prepare engineering calculations and documents that define both the initial solution and additional future optimization opportunities
  • Collaborate with Data Analytics team
  • Translate data insights into practical, site-level actions
  • Evaluate and compare manual and automated solutions
  • Collaborate with solutions engineering for new business on sustaining accounts
  • Support business development by contributing to RFP responses on sustaining accounts, including identifying productivity improvement opportunities and long-term value creation for clients
  • Support WMS and system configuration to ensure solutions are flexible and can adapt to ongoing process changes and improvement initiatives
  • Provide implementation support focused on stabilization, performance tuning, and identifying additional improvement opportunities across the operation
  • Act as a hands-on change agent in the field, helping translate engineering solutions into executable processes with frontline teams
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers, reinforcing a mindset of ownership, field engagement, and continuous improvement

 

What you need to succeed at GXO:

At a minimum, you’ll need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field, or equivalent related work or military experience
  • 4 years of engineering experience in supply chain management, logistics, warehousing or a related field
  • Experience with Microsoft Office

It’d be great if you also have:

  • 8-10 years of experience as an Industrial Engineer
  • Extensive AutoCAD experience
  • Ability to travel up to 50%
  • Time study measurement, such as MOST, a plus
  • Third-Party Logistics (3PL) experience warehousing, distribution center or fulfillment experience
  • Analytical
  • Project and resource management experience
