Automation Engineer

Join our GXO Heinz engineering team as Engineer, based in our depot in Wigan. You’ll provide technical solutions and as an engineering team, you’ll provide round the clock support for the operation and respond to technical breakdowns/repairs efficiently and in a proactive manner.
This is a full time, permanent position, working an average of 38.86 hours per week. Working 4 on 4 off (2 days 6:00 AM to 18:00 PM and 2 nights 18:00 PM to 06:00 AM).
Pay, benefits and more:
We’re looking to offer a salary of up to £52,350.48 per annum (including shift allowance), and 32 days annual leave (inclusive of bank holidays). Your benefits package includes a company sponsored pension scheme, life assurance and access to our benefits platform, including retail discounts.
What you’ll do on a typical day:
- Own the daily operation and maintenance of automated machinery, managing proactive, reactive, and planned maintenance activities
- Respond quickly and professionally to technical issues, delivering effective solutions to minimise downtime and maintain service levels
- Work collaboratively across departments to ensure safe, compliant operations and excellent service to customers
- Operate as part of a small engineering team on a continental shift rota, completing shift reports and maintaining the Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) system
- Drive continuous improvement and provide leadership cover, contributing efficiency ideas and deputising for the Engineering Team Leader when required
What you need to succeed at GXO:
- Ability to work independently or as part of a small, collaborative engineering team
- Be comfortable and competent working at height
- Proven experience in automated environments, including PLCs, conveyors, autowrappers, AS/RS machines, closed‑loop systems, and barcode scanners
- Be a strong communicator, able to work professionally across departments
- Qualified engineer, with City & Guilds / NVQ Level 3 (Mechanical or Electrical), 18th Edition, and IOSH Managing Safely
